Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has broken more records, this time the highest earnings for any media in it's first week. It's earned so much in fact that it's beaten top spots in other formats. Activision revealed that worldwide, Modern Warfare 2 earned $550 million dollars in all territories, beating previous records set by the likes of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at $394m and The Dark Knight $203.8m.

In the UK specifically, MW2 is reported to have shifted 1.7 million units in its first five days, grossing it nearly £70 million (£67.7 million), firmly trouncing GTA IV, the previous record holder (£40 million).

Is Modern Warfare a "pop culture phenomenon" as Activision CEO Bobby Kotick suggests? Not really, pop culture involves a bit more than a game simply selling well.


Not bad if you ask me. Another interesting development is that shortly after the games release, Unreal released the Unreal Engine 3 development kit for free (The engine MW2 uses).

I personally wouldn't want to use it (I have a much better engine I'm developing myself based on a heavily modified version of id Tech 3 - The Quake 3 engine), but it would be a hell of a way for people to easily develop their own games with all the gloss of modern tech ;)

Well, if your up for learning about one (And anyone else here for that matter), I can send you a preliminary copy of the toolkit I've made for mine.

It's kinda intricate though. It's a Quake 3 based engine, but I coded a bunch of stuff to allow the use of Doom 3 resources (Like Maps, MD5 models/Animations, etc.). I'll post some screenshots of it soon...

The COD: MW2 servers for the 360 are fucking terrible. So many glitches and so much lag. I was playing at Rust the other day and the match loaded and the score limit wouldn't move, after the match ended it threw 18 people (Including myself) into a 3rd Person Cage Match (Supposed to be 1 VS. 1), which was pretty fucking awesome. I was just playing earlier and every game I joined there was some new glitch where you somehow have infinite n00b tubes and you can just shoot them like an automatic gun, with no reloading evolved. Go figure they patch the Javelin glitch and something even worse happens :down:

But on the bright side I just got Fall Camo on mah ACR and I got mah first Tactical Nuke (25 Kill Streak) on Scrapyard :up: I feel so fucking proud of myself.

Not bad for Quake 3, ehh?
Ohh, and I added support for something else - Unreal 3 PSK/PSA Model and animation loading :), so your seeing an Unreal 3 model in a Doom 3 map, with extra GLSL shaders, and Relief mapped textures.
I'm on one hell of a roll with this thing if I do say so myself.

Ohh, and about the hard edges .. My engine supports FSAA at X4 (16 super samples per pixel), but my screenshot code apparently grabs the Pre-supersampled render :(
This will be fixed in short order.
